tearing and scratching.
during class last thursday, brad and marcella asked us to think more about how people will react with this device, how one might “reveal” or “uncover” some type of information. brad suggested an idea that now me and patrick are talking about pushing forward. the device would be a set of images layered on top of one another, each cut/scored at different places. as people walk by, they would begin reavealing and uncovering the layers that lie beneath. for you la’s who’ve had cat marshall for studio, it’ll be similar to her process technique of tearing and scratching. we overlayed acetone transfers of textures on site, maps, words, etc. we’d then, tear and scratch to uncover something… here’s a sample:
so we’re now beginning to think of what types of pictures, images or words might compel someone walking by to grab a piece and tear it off.

There are two things to consider here… the image or narrative and how the device actually functions. It is important to consider how the tears occur and you should prototype how you might score the surfaces to allow for multiple interactions.
